The Baby Jogger (BJ) City Mini GT is a popular single stroller and probably the best-rated baby carriage in the world. Almost everyone who has used it has been very impressed by its many convenient features. Some of the features that have made this stroller popular include its extendable handlebar, its massive canopy, the fact that it can be folded quickly, and the fact that it is compatible with many infant car seats. The fact that it is also relatively cheap has also contributed to its popularity.

However, the BJ City Mini GT was recently upgraded. The new version is known as City Mini GT2 2019. In this review, I tell you everything you need to know about the original single stroller and its upgraded version. I also directly compare the two strollers. Read on to find out which of these two Baby Jogger single strollers is the best.

City Mini GT by Baby Jogger is a stroller like no other. The City Mini GT Review

The Baby Jogger City Mini GT was first released to the market in the year 2016. As mentioned earlier, it is now one of the most popular single strollers on the planet. However, while many agree that it is a popular stroller, many also do not know that it exists in three different versions. The original version is the 2016 model. But in addition to this version, there exists a 2018 version (aka the BJ City Mini Anniversary Edition) and a 2019 version (aka the BJ City Mini GT2).

To begin this comprehensive review, here is a brief overview of how the three different models compare.

From the information presented in the table above, you can see that there is very little difference between the original 2016 model and the 2018 model. The 2018 model is referred to as the Anniversary Edition model. The changes that were made to create it were simply aesthetic. So, as noted in the table, it is not functionally different from the original model.

The latest model, however, differs in so many ways compared to the first. It differs in terms of appearance, design, and functionality. This is why it is referred to as the City Mini GT2.

The BJ City Mini GT and GT2 Features

The Seat

Both the original and the upgraded City Minis have got a great standard seat. The standard seat can only be used by babies who have grown enough to be able to sit on their own and have gained complete head and neck control. However, the maximum weight capacity for the seat is 65 pounds. So when your baby gets to this weight, you can no longer carry them using either of these two strollers.

NB: Infants younger than six months old can only be carried using this stroller in an infant car seat.

Both standard seats have a maximum capacity of 65 pounds. Both are very roomy and can be used to carry even a kid that is grown for their age.

While the weight capacity is the same for both seats, the fabric is not. The original City Mini GT has got a nylon seat fabric, while the 2019 version has got a better seat fabric or material. The seat fabric on the City Mini GT2 is better in the sense that it is smoother and softer. While it is fair to admit that the nylon seat fabric on the original model is easier to clean, the fact that the fabric on the 2019 model is smoother and softer is much more important. This is why I suggest that this new seat fabric is better

Both toddler seats have got a five-point harness and both harnesses are padded for comfort. Your baby will not feel any pinching when strapped in either seat. The only difference between the harnesses is in the opening. It is easy to open the harness on the original BJ City Mini toddler seat. Kids as young as 3.5 years old can figure out how to open it and this can be a danger. So if you end up buying the original model, you will have to watch your kid carefully. The harness on the new model is much harder for kids to open. So you have less to worry about when carrying your kid in the new model’s toddler seat.

New Baby Jogger GT2 with its synthetic fabric cover and the older one next to it with a nylon seat fabric. The new seat fabric is nicer on the baby’s skin while the older one can be cleaned quickly

Both toddler seats feature a deeply reclining backrest. So if you want your kid to nap on-the-go or to fall asleep, you can simply recline the backrest on either seat to a near-flat position to create a nice bed for your child to sleep. Since the backrests only recline to a near-flat position, it is not safe to use them to carry infants in the place of a bassinet or even an infant car seat.

The best thing about the backrest on every existing version of this stroller is the fact it can be one-handedly reclined. This is convenient as you can use the other hand to support the baby. However, to raise the backrest, you will require the use of both your hands.

Both toddler seats can be reclined deeply. However, they do not recline to a flat position hence you cannot use them in lieu of a bassinet or an infant car seat.

The seat on every model has got a vented top. This is particularly useful during hot days because it ensures airflow and, therefore, prevents the baby from becoming too hot. On cold days, this vented top can be closed.

Perhaps the biggest difference between the original toddler seat and the 2019 model standard seat is in the footrest/ leg rest. The original version has got a static leg rest same as the 2018 Anniversary Edition. In contrast, the 2019 model standard seat has got an adjustable leg rest. This makes this 2019 seat more ergonomic and comfortable for your toddler to use, especially during naptime.

Compatibility with Infant Car Seats

Both the original BJ City Mini GT and the GT2 are compatible with several car seats. This means you can use both of them as a travel system by purchasing any compatible infant car seat.

The Baby Jogger City Mini GT works with the following infant baby car seats: the Baby Jogger City Go; the Britax B-Safe; the Britax B-Safe 35 Elite; the Britax B-Safe 35; the Chicco KeyFit 30; the Cybex AtonQ; the Cybex Aton; the Peg Perego SIP; the Maxi Cosi Mico Max 30; and various Graco infant car seats. While the City Mini GT2 is compatible many more infant car seats compared to the original City Mini. Basically, almost every infant car seat by the following brands is compatible with this 2019 model single stroller: Nuna; Peg Perego; Maxi Cosi; Graco; Cybex; Chicco; Britax; and Baby Jogger.

To attach an infant car seat, you need to first attach adapters to the frame. Once the adapters are attached you just need to click in a compatible infant car seat and you will be ready to move. Because of the compatibility with many infant car seats, all Baby Jogger City Mini GT models can be utilized from day one.

Compatibility of these stroller models with infant car seats also makes them perfect for moms and dads who drive often with their infants. This is because it allows them to drive to with their babies and quickly transition between the car and stroller whenever there is a need.

As I have mentioned above, you need to attach car seat adapters to use them. However, this is only the case for the original and the 2018 Anniversary Edition models. The new model has adapters included for Graco and Baby Jogger infant car seats.

The new model on the left-hand side and the original model on the right-hand side. Both strollers can be converted into travel systems as seen in the image.

Compatibility with Bassinets

The Baby Jogger City Mini GT is compatible with bassinets. This is a seating or rather sleeping configuration that is perfect for infants or newborns. This is because it is flat and, therefore, provides full support for the head and spine of the baby.

The Deluxe Pram bassinet is compatible with the 2016 City Mini GT. It is well-designed with a big canopy, a comfy bed, and a vented backside.

The original model is compatible with tow bassinets – the Deluxe Pram and the Compact Pram. As mentioned, bassinets are a perfect seating or sleeping configuration for newborns.

The Canopy

Both the original model and the 2019 model have got a massive canopy with three panels. However, there are several differences between the two canopies. The original model has got a decent canopy while the new one has got a much more upgraded version of the same canopy.

The new stroller on the left and the original on the right. Both have got a massive canopy to protect the baby from the sun.

Both models of the Baby Jogger City Mini have got two peeking or viewing windows on their canopies. These windows allow you to constantly monitor your little one regardless of whether you have fully extended the canopy or not. The windows on the original model have got a Velcro closure. And if you know Velcro closure than you know how noisy it can be during the opening. Some parents own the original Baby Jogger City Mini GT claim that the noise from the Velcro closure sometimes wakes up their babies. In contrast, the windows on the new model have got a silent magnetic closure. No parent is yet to complain about the noise levels of this closure.

The viewing window with the Velcro closure (2016 model).

Despite the differences between the canopies, one thing that is similar between them is the fact that they can both be fully extended. Therefore, if you want a stroller that can fully protect your baby from the weather elements you can choose either of these models because they both have a canopy that can do that. Both canopies can be extended to extend the shade to your baby’s knees.

The Wheels

The biggest difference between the 2019, 2018, and 2016 versions of the Baby Jogger Mini GT and other single strollers is in the wheels. All these versions of the stroller have got a three-wheel design. All the three wheels have a diameter of 8.5”. This means they are big enough to handle almost any type of terrain. The best thing about the wheels is the fact that they never get a puncture as they are not inflatable wheels. So you do not need to worry about getting a flat tire when using any Baby Jogger City Mini stroller.

In contrast to the original model that simply had a three-wheel design, the 2019 model has got an additional feature. The additional feature is a brilliant suspension system. The system makes it easier to push and maneuver the stroller and makes the stroller ride smoother for your baby.

The new model on the left and the original one on the right. Both strollers have got a three-wheel design with three non-inflatable 8.5” wheels. The new model, however, has got a brilliant suspension system that makes rides more comfortable for babies.

The 8.5” non-inflatable wheels on both strollers are perfect for strolling both on flat urban surfaces and on rough ones such as dirt roads, grass, cobbled streets, cracked sidewalks, and gravel. But while both the models have got wheels that can handle rough terrain, they are not suitable for extensive use on rough terrain. They are also not appropriate for jogging with the baby. Look for a jogger if you want a single stroller you can run with.

The Brake

Both the original and the upgraded strollers have got a brake that is hand-operated and not foot-operated. I prefer this kind of brake since it can be applied easily regardless of the kind of shoes one is wearing.

The hand-operated brake on the original model City Mini GT. The new model has the same type of brake.

While the brake on both these single strollers is hand-operated, it is not on the push bar as is the case with most hand-operated brakes. The brake is located just beneath the push bar/ handlebar. So if it not necessarily easy to use. However, I must say it is much better to use or apply compared to foot-operated brakes.

The Handlebar

The one thing that has remained the same in the City Mini GT throughout the years is the handlebar. The handlebar is made in such a way that it is easy to grip and push. And instead of a foam cover, it has got a rubberized cover. Foam covers on stroller handlebars usually break or tear easily, while this rubberized cover does not. So you can expect this to serve you for long.

The new and the original City Mini GT models. Both handlebars have got a rubberized cover and are adjustable.

In contrast to the standard Baby Jogger City Mini, both the City Mini GT and the GT2 have got a handlebar that rotates. It does not rotate completely, you can adjust it from 30” from the floor/ ground to 43.5”. What this means is that although it is not a telescoping handlebar, its height is adjustable and it can, therefore, be made more comfortable for a tall or short parent to push.

The Storage Basket / Space

In my opinion, the storage basket on the City Mini GT is a bit small for a premium single stroller like it. A loosely packed diaper bag will take nearly all the space in the basket. Moreover, I also think that the storage basket on this original model stroller is a bit difficult to access.

Considering the fact that the smallish size of the storage basket is something that many customers had pointed out in many online reviews, I expected Baby Jogger to address the issue on the 2019 model. However, they did not. The new model has a storage basket of roughly the same size as the original model. However, with this said, both strollers have got an additional storage space. The additional storage space is in the form of a mesh storage space behind the toddler seat.

The new and the original City Mini GT models. Both strollers have got a smallish storage basket below the seat and an additional storage pocket behind each seat.

The mesh storage pocket behind each toddler seat can be used to hold essentials such as wet wipes, a wallet, a phone, snacks or a water bottle. Because one can reach it easily and quickly.

In case you need more space, you can buy a parent organizer. Both strollers work well with parent organizers but none of them is sold with one.

The Weight and the Folding

The original City Mini GT stroller weighs approximately 23 pounds. This may sound heavy but it is roughly the average weight of a convertible baby buggy. In fact, it is lighter than most convertible strollers. You will find it easy to lift it into the trunk of your car even if you are a petite woman. However, while it is easy to lift into the trunk of a car, it is not easy to carry upstairs. In contrast, the new model, despite its upgraded features, is easy to carry upstairs. This is because it weighs just 21.4 lbs. This is more than a pound lighter than the original model. So it is not a surprise that it is easier to lift or carry.

According to the many people who have used both these strollers, the best thing about them is that they can be folded quickly using one hand. This is thanks to Baby Jogger’s patented folding technology. You only need to pull a special handle for the buggy to fold and lock itself automatically. This will leave your other arm free to support your baby

It is super easy to fold both strollers.

Both strollers do not take a lot of space when folded. You can easily find somewhere to store them even if you are living in a smallish apartment. The folding size of the original model is 29.53″ by 24.21″ by 10.24″, while the folding size of the new 2019 model is 32.5″ by 25.7″ by 13″. From these dimensions, you can probably tell that the new model has a slightly larger fold size compared to the original one. However, it can fit into almost all car trunks just as is the case with the original model.

The new model and the original model have a similar fold-size that is not so big.

However, despite the folding design being innovative and easy to use, there is one thing, Baby Jogger could have done better. They could have made the stroller to fold interiorly. This could have protected the seat and its fabric from getting dirty. It could also protect it from getting easily damaged. Nevertheless, even if both strollers fold outwardly, transporting them carefully and handling them with caution will prevent the seat fabric from getting damaged or dirty.

Maneuverability

Both the Baby City Mini GT and the GT2 are easy to steer. In fact, they are so easy to steer that you can just do it one-handedly. The original version particularly moves smoothly. You will find it easy to steer even on challenging terrains such as sidewalks, gravel, grass, cracked pavement, and cobblestone.

But while the original City Mini GT model maneuvers like a breeze, the 2019 model is more studier. This is because it comes with a special suspension system that works like a charm. The system makes it easy to navigate over rough surfaces and makes the ride more comfortable for your little one. Thus, if you live in an area where you have to frequently navigate over rough surfaces or terrain, you should get the City Mini GT2 instead of the original model.

The fact that the handbrake on both strollers is adjustable makes steering either stroller even more convenient for moms and dads of any height. The presence of a handbrake also gives parents full control when pushing either stroller.

What other moms and dads think of both the original and the 2019 models

As usual, I skimmed through the many reviews left on Amazon by moms and dads who have purchased or used the Baby Jogger City Mini GT and the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2. What I could immediately gather from the reviews was the fact that the majority of moms and dads think highly of both strollers. Moreover, most parents were very impressed by the quality and the functionality of both strollers.

The majority were particularly impressed by the fact that the wheels could handle just about any terrain. Many were also impressed by the fact that the strollers were both quite nimble and that steering was a breeze.

The adjustable handlebar on both strollers was also a hit with most parents. Many parents loved the fact that they could adjust the handlebar to make their stroller more convenient to push.

From skimming through the reviews, I could also tell that many parents also loved how easy it is to fold both strollers and their small fold-sizes.

One thing parents seemed not to like about the original City Mini GT was the size of the storage space underneath the toddler seat. From the reviews, I could also tell that those who have used the City Mini GT2 were not big fans of its storage basket either.

The 2019 Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 is available in six exciting colors. Many parents seem to be of the opinion that the color options of the new model are better than those of the original model. Accessories for the Original Model BJ City Mini GT

The Baby Jogger Company has got several accessories that are compatible with the original model stroller. However, they do not come in one package with the stroller; you have to buy them separately. Below are some of the accessories you might find useful.

The Parent Organizer – This accessory is basically a pouch that you can use to keep essentials such as your phone and wallet within easy reach.
The Beverage Holder – You can use this accessory to hold your coffee or water when strolling with your baby.
The Child Tray – This is an accessory that you can use to keep a sippy cup and snacks within the reach of your baby.
The Belly Bar – This is a safety accessory. It protects your baby and he or she can hold onto it during the ride.
The Deluxe Pram – If your child is younger than six months old, you should get this accessory for them. It is what you need to carry your infant baby safely using the original model BJ City Mini GT.
The Standing Board – Also known as the glider board, this is an accessory that you can add to your single stroller and convert it into a double stroller; an older sibling to your baby can ride on it standing.

A Side By Side Comparison of the features of the Baby Jogger City Mini GT2 and the City Mini 2

Both the City Mini GT2 and the City Mini 2 are 2019 upgrades of original models. However, while they are both new single strollers from the same brand, they surprisingly have different features. The main difference between the two Baby Jogger 2019 strollers is that the City Mini GT2 is perfect for urban parents who frequently stroll on rough terrain, while the City Mini 2 is lighter and perfect for urban use only.

Other differences between the two strollers are captured in the comparison table below.

A Side By Side Comparison of the features of the Baby Jogger City Mini GT and the City Mini

After comparing the new 2019 models above, here is a comparison of the original models of both strollers. As you will be able to notice in this comparison, these original strollers are somewhat similar but at the same time, they have some key differences. In summary, the main difference between the two strollers is that the City Mini GT is quite heavier and comes with an adjustable push bar which makes it easier to maneuver, while the City Mini is lighter but with a static push bar. The former is perfect for most terrains, while the latter is suitable only for flat urban terrains.

What You Should Have in Mind Before Buying the City Mini GT or GT2 2019

One thing you should have in mind before buying the GT2 or the GT is that although their wheels are big enough to handle uneven ground, they are not ideal for unbeaten paths and sandy beaches. Moreover, the size of the wheels on these strollers should not fool you into thinking they are good enough for use as jogging strollers. This is because they are not. Buy a real jogging stroller if you want to go jogging with your baby.

Why You Should Buy the City Mini GT or its 2019 version

  1. It is a quality stroller that is quite easy to maneuver.
  2. It comes with a big canopy to provide a massive shade for your baby.
  3. It is a long-lasting stroller that you can use to carry kids as old as 5 years old.
