The Best Lightweight Strollers in 2020

Below is my comprehensive review of the top lightweight strollers for 2020, please be sure to comment with any question you might have. Enjoy reading

1. THE BABYZEN YOYO+

THE BABYZEN YOYO+

In my opinion, this is the best lightweight stroller that money can buy. The reason why I say this is because it has several unique features that make it quite convenient to use.

  • It is compatible with several newborn car seats and can, therefore, be used from birth or as a travel system.
  • Its canopy is large and provides wonderful coverage against the sun and protection against harmful UV rays.
  • It has a large storage basket with a respectable maximum weight limit of 11 pounds; you can fit all your infant’s gear in it.
  • The YOYO+ has a brilliant suspension system that makes it easy for parents to maneuver and comfortable for babies to ride.
  • It is designed for long term use; you can carry your baby until he or she reaches 40 pounds.

The BABYZEN YOYO+ can be used from day 1

One of the things you will love the most about this lightweight stroller is how easy it is to fold. You can literally fold it in like five seconds and use its special strap to carry it like a backpack. This makes it very convenient to use. When folded, it becomes small enough to even fit in airplane overhead compartments. So you will not find any trouble traveling with it.

The BABYZEN YOYO+ weighs 14 pounds. The fact that it is this light makes it easy to maneuver even for petite and small users.

Almost everything about the stroller is unique and of superior quality. For example, it has a reclining seat. The seat comes with soft padding that makes it comfortable for the baby to sit on even for extended rides.

My verdict: This BABYZEN lightweight stroller is a premium quality stroller. It is made using high-quality materials, it looks really nice, and it works brilliantly. For the above reasons, it is quite expensive. But it is worth every dollar you will spend on it if you can afford it.

What other moms and dads think

As usual, I always check Amazon reviews to find out what other parents think about a baby product before reviewing or buying it. Below are the opinions of other parents according to the reviews:

Pros

Pros

  • It is compatible with many infant car seats.
  • It is easy to push and maneuver.
  • Can be pushed one-handedly.
  • It is compact and very light.
  • Very easy and convenient to use.

Cons

Cons

  • Not the easiest stroller to recline.
  • The handlebar is not adjustable.

What you should know before buying this lightweight stroller

The stroller has somewhat small wheels. This means it is only suitable for flat city terrains; it does not ride well on harsh terrain. Nevertheless, you will not find it challenging to push or maneuver on cobbled streets.

Why buy this stroller?

  1. Because it is very convenient to use. It has many features that make it quite easy and enjoyable to use.
  2. Because it is stylish and made of high-quality materials. You probably won’t find any other stroller as premium as it is.
  3. Because it is travel-friendly. It satisfies the carry-on requirements for most airlines and it is lightweight and very easy to carry around.
One last thing

The closest competitor to the BABYZEN YOYO+ is the Mountain Buggy Nano. They look pretty similar and have roughly the same features. This usually makes it difficult for parents to choose between the two. Below is a side by side comparison to make it easier for you to see how the two lightweight strollers compare.

2. THE GB Pockit Plus

The GB Pockit Plus

There is no way I could have completed this ranking without including the GB Pockit Plus. This is because it is one of the most brilliant lightweight strollers currently in production. The GB Pockit Plus is a significant upgrade from its predecessor the GB Pockit.

Some of the differences between it and the original version include:

  • Size: it is bigger than the original model.
  • Canopy: it has a wider canopy that provides more coverage.
  • Compatibility with infant car seats: it is compatible with many infant car seats and is, therefore, suitable for use from day 1.
  • Main seat: its main seat can be reclined to make it more comfortable for the baby to nap on the go.

And although it is a significant upgrade, some of its features remain the same. For example, its wheels are still small and it still folds the same way.

However, with that said, it is still a better baby buggy than its predecessor albeit being slightly heavier because of its new features.

The GB Pockit Plus is a three-in-one stroller

The GB Pockit Plus is a three-in-one lightweight stroller. Three-in-one in the sense that it can be used an ordinary stroller, as an infant carrier with the carrycot, and as a travel system with an infant car seat.

And although it packs extra features compared to the original version, it still folds into a pretty tiny 12.5 by 7.8 by 14.9 inches unit. The new fold size is obviously not as tiny as the fold size of the original GB Pockit. However, it is tinier than most lightweight strollers and, therefore, easier to travel with than most strollers. It is also easier to store for the same reason.

The fact that it is easy to travel with is what makes it one of the best lightweight strollers.

What other moms and dads think

Below are the pros and cons of the stroller according to reviews left by parents on the product’s website and on e-commerce sites such as Amazon.com.

Pros

Pros

  • It is light and has a tiny fold size making it very portable.
  • Its tiny fold size makes it easy to travel with.
  • It is sturdy enough to use for a long time (until late toddlerhood).
  • It rides smoothly on most city surfaces.
  • It has a decent canopy that provides significant coverage.
  • It has a wider and more comfortable seat.
  • Its seat can be reclined for comfortable napping.

Cons

Cons

  • Folding requires both hands.
  • The main seat does not have a true upright position.
  • It is not the easiest stroller to recline.

What you should know before buying this lightweight stroller

The GB Pockit Plus has no suspension system and it, therefore, does not ride well on bumpy roads or surfaces.

Why buy this stroller?
  1. Because it can easily be folded up into a very small unit making it easy and convenient to travel with.
  2. Because its small size makes it easy to transport and to store.
  3. Because it is compatible with a carrycot and can, therefore, be used from birth.

3. The Baby Jogger City Tour 2 (2019)

The Baby Jogger City Tour 2

If there is one stroller I would personally purchase from this list it would be this one. The City Tour 2 from Baby Jogger is an improvement of the manufacturer’s bestselling original City Tour stroller.

The original version was a bestseller because it was premium, stylish, and very easy to use especially on smooth surfaces. However, it had quite a number of flaws that have been fixed in the City Tour 2. For example, while the original version could not be used from day 1, this upgraded version can be used from birth as it is compatible with several bassinets and infant car seats.

Another flaw that has been fixed is the main seat. It used to be small and not really comfortable especially for small babies. It has now been made deeper and very comfy.

The seat has also been made reclinable. You can recline it to different positions to make it more comfortable for your baby. You can even recline it to a near-horizontal position to make it comfy for your young one to sleep on it while you are on the go.

Moreover, unlike other lightweight strollers that cannot be used for long, the seat on this one is steady enough that you can use it until your baby turns three or four years old.

On top of the seat, there is a huge canopy that can be expanded further to provide extra coverage and protection. The canopy is made of a special material that provides protection against harmful UV rays.

The canopy has a nice see-through window that you can use to closely monitor your child,

When I started talking about this stroller I said it is the one I would personally go for. The reason why I said that is because it is so easy to fold and can, in fact, be folded one-handedly. I like this because I often struggle folding strollers and the videos I have seen of this stroller being folded tell me that it is different. And that it will be a breeze for me to fold it.

The stroller typically folds into a small pack that is easy to store, transport, or travel with. Additionally, it weighs just 14 pounds and it meets the carry-on requirements set by most airlines. So it is not just easy but super convenient to travel with.

What I also love about it is the fact that it is cheaper than comparable stroller models such as Twist, Minu, and YOYO+. So if you have been looking for a decent lightweight stroller that is not expensive, the City Tour 2 is one of the best options to consider.

Baby Jogger City Tour 2 can be used from day one and is perfect for traveling

And there is one more feature I must tell you about before I stop talking about this stroller. That feature is its handlebar. The Baby Jogger City Tour 2 has got a single continuous handlebar rather than two as is the case with older lightweight baby carriers. This design makes it possible to push it singlehandedly.

What other moms and dads think

Below are the pros and cons of the stroller according to reviews left by parents on the product’s website and on e-commerce sites such as Amazon.com.

Pros

Pros

  • It can be folded one-handedly.
  • It is perfect for traveling as its fold size is small and it is lightweight.
  • Brilliant canopy with a peekaboo window.
  • Has a deep and comfortable reclining seat.
  • Comes with adjustable leg rest.
  • Super lightweight.
  • Compact fold size.

Cons

Cons

  • Its storage basket is somewhat small.

What you should know before buying this lightweight stroller

Like most other lightweight baby buggies, this one comes with smallish wheels so it does not do really well on bumpy surfaces and rough terrains.

Why buy this stroller?
  1. Because it comes with a deep and comfortable toddler seat. It will be comfortable for your baby until he or she reaches 45 pounds.
  2. Because it has a small and compact fold size. This makes it perfect for traveling, for carrying around, and for those who do not have a lot of storage space.
  3. It comes with special features such as a footrest and a travel bag. No need to spend extra on them.

4. The UPPAbaby MINU

The UPPAbaby MINU

The UPPAbaby brand is to the stroller market, what Apple is to the smartphone market. In other words, it is the premium stroller brand out there. The brand’s UPPAbaby CRUZ and UPPAbaby VISTA are among its bestselling ones.

But while CRUZ and VISTA are quite popular they are not lightweight. At least not as lightweight as the UPPAbaby MINU. The UPPAbaby MINU weighs 14.8 pounds making it the lightest UPPAbaby stroller on the market.

Besides being lightweight, it folds into a pretty compact unit that is perfect for small car boots and apartments.

As is the case with other UPPAbaby products, it is stylish and well-made. However, unlike the other stroller models from the brand, it is compatible with more newborn car seats. It is also compatible with several bassinets. What I am trying to say in those many words is that you can use it from birth.

The stroller comes with a pretty comfortable main seat. However, according to the manufacturer, the seat can only be used when the baby turns three. The seat can be reclined to multiple positions, which is also nice.

I really love how the shade provided by the canopy covers the seat below it. I also like the fact that the canopy is extendable and has a UV-protection visor. And just as you would expect from an UPPAbaby stroller, MINU’s canopy includes a peekaboo window that can be silently opened or close using its magnetic closure to monitor the baby.

The UPPAbaby MINU is easy to fold and folds pretty nicely into a compact unit

This stroller comes with small wheels. But even though they are small, the stroller rides pretty smoothly on most city surfaces including gravel driveways and cracked pavements.

MINU also comes with a brilliant suspension system. The system will make it comfortable for your baby to ride the stroller, especially on slightly rough terrains.

And in case you want to break the stroller and sit on a park bench or anywhere you want, you can simply engage the parking brake near the rear wheels. The brake is sandal-friendly and so easy to use.

Despite being a lightweight stroller, the UPPAbaby MINU comes with a pretty big storage basket. The basket also has a very decent maximum weight limit of 20 pounds. You can easily fit a fully packed diaper bag inside it. You can also use it to carry small shopping.

Lastly, this stroller is as easy to fold as the just reviewed Baby Jogger City Tour 2. You can literally fold it single-handedly in like ten seconds. In addition, its fold size is pretty compact and it is fitted with a shoulder strap making it pretty easy to carry around and super convenient for traveling.

What other moms and dads think

I read UPPAbaby MINU’s reviews on Amazon.com to find out what other moms and dads were saying about the stroller. From the reading, I discovered that the baby buggy is quite popular among many young parents. Below is a summary of the opinions of the parents organized in terms of pros and cons.

Pros

Pros

  • Comes with a huge and easy to access storage basket.
  • Folding it is a piece of cake.
  • It folds into a very compact unit that is easy to carry.
  • It has a sandals-friendly brake.
  • It can be pushed single-handedly.
  • It is tastefully designed and simultaneously lightweight and robust.
  • It is compatible with many infant car seats.
  • Has a huge canopy that provides maximum coverage.
  • Its canopy is spacious enough with plenty of headspace for your kid to grow into.

Cons

Cons

  • Its handlebar is not adjustable.
  • Although its standard seat is reclinable, it is not the easiest to recline.

What you should know before buying this lightweight stroller

Although this stroller has a pretty compact fold size, it is not small enough to meet the carry-on requirements of most airlines.

Moreover, even though the stroller is pretty stable and considerably easier to maneuver compared to other strollers, it may tip and fall backwards if you hang your handbag or shopping on its handlebar.

Why buy this stroller?
  1. Because it is a premium quality stroller that is well-designed and functions brilliantly.
  2. Because it is a three-in-one stroller that can be used as a travel system, as a newborn baby carriage, and as a toddler transport.
  3. Because it works perfectly in the city and it is easy to travel with.

5. The Cybex Eezy S Twist

The Cybex Eezy S Twist

The Cybex Eezy S Twist is not your ordinary run of the mill stroller. It is quite special. In fact, dare I say, it is one of the most unique strollers out there. This is because it comes with a special seat that can be set to face any direction (hence the S Twist name).

With this seat, you can easily turn your baby to face forward and enjoy the surroundings or to face you and feel reassured without having to go through the hassle of removing and reattaching the seat. So it is a pretty convenient feature.

Moreover, this Cybex stroller is also pretty versatile. It is versatile in the sense that it comes with special features that make it easy to use.

For example, its rotating seat comes with an enormous overhead canopy that provides a maximum shield against the sun and the wind. The canopy can also be extended to provide extra coverage. Furthermore, unlike the canopies on other strollers, this one is pretty roomy. There are some parents who wish the canopy was a bit lower but I do not see the logic in that.

The rotating seat is also reclinable. It can recline to different positions including the preferred near-horizontal position. The fact that the seat can recline to this position coupled with the fact that it is well-padded and plushy, makes it very comfortable to nap on while on the go.

This baby transport can be made newborn ready. This can be done inexpensively by purchasing the Cybex Cocoon S. The cocoon will provide your baby with the support he or she needs and prevent any back or neck injuries. Another reason why you should buy the cocoon is space. The Cybex Cocoon S will take less space than any infant car seat or bassinet.

The Cybex Eezy S Twist can be folded up

Like most other lightweight strollers, this stroller can also be folded. Its fold size is small and makes it easy to put in the car trunk, to fit in overhead compartments of buses and airplanes, and to store it in a closet. In other words, it folds up into a compact unit that makes it very easy to store or transport. So if your life revolves around cars, airplanes, and trains, you will really love it.

This stroller is compatible with Cybex and GB infant car seats. So you can also use it as a travel system. It is best used with Cybex newborn car seats since they are made by the same manufacturer who makes it.

This Cybex stroller is available in a variety of attractive colors. It is also available in several editions. Although the editions vary slightly the main features discussed above remain the same.

What other moms and dads think

I checked various online sources to find out what other moms and dads regarded as the pros and cons of this product. Below is what I found out:

Pros

Pros

  • It is super light and portable.
  • It is a piece of cake to fold.
  • It has a brilliant suspension system that makes strolls comfortable.
  • It can be pushed one-handedly on smooth surfaces.
  • It is made of superior quality materials.
  • It is compatible with a special newborn cocoon and with several newborn car seats.
  • It has a tall and roomy canopy.
  • It can recline to a near-flat position.
  • Its main seat can be reversed by rotation.

Cons

Cons

  • Its wheels are smallish and unsuitable for rough terrain.
  • It has no see-through window for closely monitoring the baby.
  • Its handlebar is not adjustable.

What you should know before buying this lightweight stroller

You should know that you can only use this stroller from day 1 if you get either the Cybex Cocoon X or one of the stroller’s compatible newborn car seats and its adapter (if necessary).

Why buy this stroller?
  1. Because it is easy to store or travel with when it is folded.
  2. Because it has many functional features including its special rotating and reclining seat that make it a joy to use.
  3. Because it can be converted into a travel system.

6. The GB Pockit

The GB Pockit

Any ranking of lightweight strollers without the GB Pockit is incomplete. This is because this famous baby transport is the lightest stroller currently available on the market at 9.5 pounds.

In addition to being very light, this stroller also has a pretty small fold size. In fact, the fold size is so small that it holds the current Guinness Book World Record for the most compact baby carriage. The fact that its fold size is quite tiny means it meets the carry-online regulations for most airplanes around the world.

The small fold size coupled with its lightweightness also makes it possible to carry it in a handbag.

Storing it is also pretty easy as you would expect.

The feature that surprises most people about the GB Pockit is its seat. The seat is sturdy enough to safely transport your baby until he or she turns five or 55 pounds. In contrast, there are a number of strollers heavier than this one that can only be used until the baby gets to 40 pounds.

In addition to the respectable maximum capacity, the seat is also nicely padded and comfortable. However, it is not comfortable or safe enough to use to transport a baby younger than 6 months according to the company website.

You may also not like the fact that the seat cannot recline. Many moms and dads would prefer it to have a reclinable seat to make it comfortable for babies to nap on during strolls. In contrast, the previously described GB Pockit Plus does have a reclinable seat. So if that is what you are looking for, you should go for it.

There is a small 11-pound maximum capacity storage basket below the main seat of the GB Pockit. It may not be big enough to accommodate a large-size diaper bag but it is big enough to carry important baby essentials.

The one thing that did not impress me about the GB Pockit is the fact that its canopy is not big enough. It does not shield the baby enough from the sun and the wind. However, the many other positive attributes of the stroller more than make up for this drawback.

Lastly, the stroller is easy to maneuver. It is light and moves smoothly especially on flat surfaces. It can also work well on slightly bumpy surfaces when you lock its front wheels.

The stroller is so small it can fit in your bag

What other moms and dads think?

When I was researching this article, this stroller had nearly 800 reviews on Amazon alone. This shows just how popular it is. The majority of the reviews were very positive. Below is a summary of the GB Pockit’s pros and cons based on the reviews.

Pros

Pros

  • Sturdy and durable despite being extremely lightweight.
  • Perfect for traveling.
  • Can easily be folded or unfolded.
  • Features a quality frame and premium fabrics.
  • Its folding size is pretty small and convenient.

Cons

Cons

  • The canopy does not provide enough coverage.
  • The storage basket is tiny.

What you should know before buying this lightweight stroller

This stroller may be the lightest and perhaps most compact one ever made. But there are a few things that you should be aware of before ordering it. First, its canopy is small and does not provide enough coverage. Second, its wheels are also small and although they do well on most city surfaces, they cannot handle bumpy grounds. Lastly, this stroller is not suitable for use from birth since you cannot add a bassinet or an infant car seat to it.

Why buy this stroller?
  1. Because its fold size is really compact and, therefore, easy to carry, transport, and travel with.
  2. Because it is perfect for parents with small apartments where there isn’t enough storage space.
  3. Because it is absolutely brilliant for late afternoon strolls.

7. The Diono Traverze

The Diono Traverze

This baby carriage was released late last year and it is quite popular with moms and dads who like style and traveling.

The style aspect is pretty clear. As in, it is an eye-catching stroller. The traveling part obviously needs some explanation. Why do parents who like traveling like this stroller? Well, there are four reasons why.

  • First, a parent can fold it with one hand in just a few moments.
  • Second, it folds into a really compact unit that is easy to store and easy to travel with.
  • Third, it comes with an extendable handlebar that can be used to pull it as you would do a suitcase when it is folded.
  • Lastly, it comes with a travel bag that protects it from dirt and keeps it folded when traveling.

So if you like traveling or if you have to travel frequently, it is something you will definitely like to have.

Of the lightweight strollers I have reviewed in this post, it is the third lightest one. Only the GB Pockit and its updated version are lighter than it. It weighs 12.3 pounds and is lighter than the Mountain Buggy Nano, the Baby Jogger City Tour 2, the UPPAbaby MINU, and the BABYZEN YOYO+.

The Diono Traverse folds up into a suitcase-like unit for easy traveling

There are many things I like about this lightweight stroller. The chief among them is the fact that it has a very comfortable seat. The seat has a canopy on top. Although the canopy is not the biggest one you will see on a stroller, it is pretty okay. Additionally, it includes magnetic closure closable mesh cutouts that ensure free airflow and prevent overheating during summer.

In case you like this stroller but you do not like the size of the canopy, you should consider the Diono Traverze Plus. It has a bigger canopy that provides a wider shield against the sun and the wind.

This stroller comes with a single continuous handlebar instead of the traditional 2 separate handles style handlebar. The design of the handlebar will enable you to push it and steer it with 1 hand, especially on smooth terrain.

Like almost every other lightweight baby buggy, the Diono Traverze is fitted with small wheels. The wheels work perfectly on park paths, pavements, city streets, and indoor floors. Additionally, the stroller is also fitted with a superb suspension system. The system will make it very comfortable for your baby to ride on the stroller by acting as a shock absorber. It will also prevent the wheels from getting easily stuck in cracked pavements.

The stroller comes with a reclinable seat and a comfy footrest. Your baby will love napping on it.

What other moms and dads think

As usual, I wanted to find out what other moms and dads think about this stroller. So I read the Diono Traverze reviews on Amazon.com and on other sites. Below are the opinions of other parents summarized in a simple list of pros and cons.

Pros

Pros

  • Can be pushed with one hand.
  • Has a useful zippered pocket behind the seat.
  • Closable mesh cutouts and a breathable canopy ensure free airflow during summer.
  • Comes with a sturdy frame despite.
  • Very agile and easy to steer.
  • Can be folded quickly with one hand and can be dragged like a suitcase when folded.
  • Comes with a travel bag for easy traveling.

Cons

Cons

  • Some parents think the seat is not exactly suitable for kids younger than seven months.

What you should know before buying this lightweight stroller

If you are looking for a stroller that you can use from birth, this is not it. This stroller is only suitable for babies between six months and two and a half years. This is because although its seat can recline, it does not recline to the flat position that is safest for infant babies. The recline is, however, enough for babies over six months to comfortably nap on during strolls.

Why buy this stroller?
  1. Because it is very easy to maneuver and steer. You can easily zigzag with into and out of a busy mall, train station, or airport.
  2. Because its suitcase-like dragging design, its fold size, its lightweightness, and its tiny fold size make it perfect for traveling.
  3. Because it is a piece of cake to fold and, therefore, convenient to use.

8. The Summer Infant 3Dlite Convenience Stroller

The Summer Infant 3Dlite Convenience Stroller

Although the Summer Infant is last on this ranking, it is a pretty decent stroller. In fact, it is one of the bestselling lightweight baby buggies on Amazon.com.

The stroller looks stylish and weighs just 13 pounds. The fact that it is lightweight obviously means that it is easy to carry and to travel with. Its lightweightness is complemented with its ergonomic shoulder strap that makes it even easier to carry.

The Summer Infant 3Dlite stroller comes with a reclinable seat. The seat can recline to four different positions including the deepest position which is near-flat and ideal for napping. For safety, the seat has a secure but comfortable five-point restrain. It will act like a seatbelt and prevent your baby from falling off in case of sudden braking.

You will love the design of the front wheels on this stroller. Why? Because they act as shock absorbers and hence make it is easier to steer and more comfortable for the baby to ride on.

Something else that is lovable about this stroller is the fact that it has a generously-sized canopy complete with a sun visor. In other words, it will provide your son or daughter with full protection against the wind and the sun.

It also comes with a big basket that has enough space to accommodate a large-size diaper bag. If you check out the product’s reviews on e-commerce sites, you will see that many parents agree that the large basket size is the stroller’s best asset. Besides the storage basket, the stroller also has a zippered pocket on the back of the main seat. You can use it to carry things that you may need to reach quickly e.g. your phone, your keys, or your wallet.

What to consider before buying a stroller; a buying a guide

If you are still not decided on which lightweight stroller to get you should read this guide. This is because in it I will share important tips and pointers to help you choose the best baby buggy for your baby.

It is important to get a quality stroller when in the market for one. This is because of two key reasons. The first reason is that strollers are expensive. Purchasing one that ends up not serving you as you expected is a huge waste of money. The second reason relates to convenience. Buying just any stroller means you could end up with a baby transporter that does not make life any easier for you. In contrast, choosing carefully could see you end up with a stroller that is versatile and extremely fun to use.

This guide should help you to choose a stroller that is sturdy, versatile, easy to use, and that provides real value for money.

Let’s begin.

Why buy a lightweight stroller

A lightweight stroller is often the second stroller most moms and dads buy after a pram or a standard stroller. So one thing you must understand is that most parents do not buy lightweight strollers as their primary strollers but as their secondary strollers.

So why buy a lightweight stroller as a secondary or second stroller, if you already have one? Well, there are several reasons why. But before we get to them, let me make it clear what lightweight strollers are.

They are strollers that weigh between eight and seventeen pounds. Most of them actually weigh around 13 pounds. So they are very easy to steer and very easy to carry when folded (most of them can be folded).

The fact that they can be folded and they weigh just around 13 pounds makes them the ideal strollers to use for using public means for transportation, and for traveling. They are also a great option for those with small apartments or cars as they can usually be folded compactly for storage or carrying in a small car trunk.

One thing you must also know about lightweight strollers is the fact that most of them are not meant for off-road use. This is because their wheels are small and they do not have the suspension systems to handle off-road terrain.

Now that you know everything you need to know about lightweight strollers, it is time to reveal the reasons why parents buy lightweight strollers.

The reasons include:

  • For traveling by public transportation, by car, or by plane.
  • For running errands and daily city use.
  • For strolls over flat grounds.
  • For quick trips to local parks or the zoo.
  • To have a stroller that is easy to steer and maneuver.

What to expect when you buy a lightweight stroller

Apart from the fact that they are lighter in weight, lightweight strollers are not very different from ordinary strollers. They have got most of the same features you would expect from a standard stroller.

Generally, a lightweight stroller will weigh between eight and sixteen pounds and will have the following features: a reclining seat, a storage basket, and a canopy. Most lightweight strollers also include extra features such as beverage holders, footrests, parking brakes, and parent organizers.

In short, they are just standard strollers but lighter.

The one thing most parents love about the strollers is the fact that they can be folded into very compact units.

Examples of such strollers include the GB Pockit, the GB Pockit Plus, the BABYZEN YOYO+, the Baby Jogger City Tour 2, and MINU from UPPAbaby.

The things you need consider before buying a lightweight stroller

Size

Size is the number one thing to consider when buying a lightweight stroller. The reason why is because it is the size of the stroller that will determine your comfort and your baby’s comfort. Obviously, the biggest reason why people buy lightweight strollers is their small size. Nevertheless, if you buy a lightweight stroller that is too small, you will have sacrificed comfort for your baby because it will be uncomfortable. It will also definitely be fragile.

Oppositely, if you buy a lightweight stroller that is relatively big, it will not be great for traveling or for use when expecting to use public transportation as it will be too heavy. It will also be difficult to maneuver.

So what you need to choose is a lightweight stroller that is kind of like not too small and not too big. Ideally, such a stroller will weigh about 13 pounds. Anything less than 11 pounds is too small, and anything more than 15 pounds is too big.

Examples of strollers that are not too big or too small and are perfect for use as lightweight strollers include the UPPAbaby G-Lite, the UPPAbaby MINU, the UPPAbaby G-Luxe, the GB Pockit, the GB Pockit Plus, Recaro EasyLife, Quinny Yezz, Graco LiteRider, Joovy Groove, Mountain Buggy Nano, Chicco Echo, and Graco Breeze.

Frame

This is the second most important factor to consider. A lightweight stroller will obviously be light. However, it should not be too light otherwise it will be fragile, shaky, and unsafe. So as a parent, you should be looking for a frame that is kind of light but not too light e.g. aluminum. An aluminum frame stroller will typically be very sturdy, safe, and extremely durable.

Unfortunately, quite a number of lightweight strollers have non-aluminum frames. This makes them so fragile that it feels as if they will break during the first ride. However, there are also many lightweight strollers available on the market that are made of tough frames like aluminum. They include the UPPAbaby MINU and the Diono Traverze. Aluminum frames make them tough, robust, and durable without affecting their lightweightness.

Wheels

Most current lightweight strollers have got two single front wheels instead of the previous dual front wheels style. This is good because the two single front wheels are the best for steering and maneuverability.

The dual front wheels design was preferred in the past because it was thought to make strollers more stable. However, it was discovered that the design made strollers difficult to push. It was also discovered that strollers with the design stuck more frequently when riding on grass and gravel.

So manufacturers started going for single front wheels and decided to achieve stability by other means such as making lightweight strollers wider.

So if you are buying a lightweight stroller make sure it has a single front wheels design. This will automatically make it easier to steer and maneuver.

The single and dual front wheels designs

Safety

Safety is also one of the key factors you need to consider. In terms of safety, there are several things you may need to consider and the first one is parking brakes. Parking brakes act like handbrakes. Their purpose is to immobilize the stroller. So if for any reason you want your stroller to stand still, you are simply supposed to engage its parking brakes.

The problem is that not all strollers have parking brakes. Moreover, there is quite a number whose parking brakes are not flip flop friendly. So you cannot easily engage them if you are wearing flip flops.

Therefore, when buying a stroller, you should make sure that it has a parking brake and that it is easy to engage no matter what shoes you are wearing.

Parking brakes on strollers

The second thing to consider in terms of safety is the safety harness. Only buy a stroller that has a safety harness. The harness is like a seatbelt and without it, your baby could be harmed in case you crash the stroller into something or if you have to stop it suddenly.

So only buy strollers that have safety harnesses. And if possible go for the stroller with a five-point harness. It is the most secure and recommended safety harness.

Versatility

Generally, standard strollers are more versatile than lightweight strollers. Nevertheless, the latest lightweight strollers such as the ones featured in the review are pretty versatile.

The very best lightweight strollers as of now have got big canopies, deep and comfy seats, reclinable seats, footrests, big storage baskets, and can be folded. They are also compatible with bassinets and infant car seats. So do not settle for less. Make sure the lightweight stroller you want to buy is as versatile as possible before ordering it.

Examples of versatile lightweight strollers include the UPPAbaby MINU, the BABYZEN YOYO+, and most of the other strollers I have included in my ranking above.

Questions you should ask yourself to help you buy the right stroller

Why am I buying a stroller?

If you are just buying a stroller, buy a standard-sized stroller. If you are buying a stroller for traveling or for using public transportation, buy a lightweight stroller as it is specifically designed for such purposes. Lastly, if you are buying a stroller for running or jogging, buy a jogger. Buying a stroller and using it for what it was not intended is usually either expensive for nothing or unsafe for the child.

Is this my primary or secondary stroller?

When buying a primary stroller you have to make sure it is complete. In other words, you have to make sure that it has everything that makes it perfect for daily use. So make sure your primary stroller has a comfortable seat, a large canopy, a reclinable seat, a footrest, a storage basket, and an organizer.

When buying a secondary stroller, depending on why you are buying it, there are also some things you will have to make sure it has so that it can fully serve its purpose. For example, if you are buying a secondary stroller for traveling, you have to make sure it is lightweight and has a small fold size. While if you are buying it because you are expecting another baby, you have to make sure it can accommodate two babies and has the features to support them.

What is my budget?

This is also an important question you have to ask yourself. Generally, quality strollers are expensive, while those that are cheap are generally of poor quality.

Your aim, however, should be to make sure that the stroller you are buying is an absolute steal so that you can save money for upgrades such as a cocoon, an infant car seat, or a parent organizer.
